The Portland Police Chief is having an art contest. Ms. Yao chose out class to complete the mural with her. Ms. Yao came to our classroom on Wednesday and then we cut out and made stencils having to do with community. On Thursday we went to her room and we finished cutting out the things we wanted to make. I made a diamond and a profile of my face. On Friday morning we went outside to spray paint and I enjoyed it. We spray painted out stencils onto a piece of paper.

Art With Ms. Yao
By Crystal
This week in art we got a piece of paper and we drew a line for the atmosphere and the earth. We painted it white and then we put some blue into the white and then we put a whole bunch of blue. We put some stars in the sky.
Then we put some black in the atmosphere to make space. Then we let it dry and then we waited another week and painted over it. A couple people restarted.
Flipagram Watershed
I made a video on flipagram of a couple of photos from our watershed lesson with Megan a couple of weeks ago.
I am hoping to have the kids making these in the future and explain what is happening in the video.
Check back soon for more videos.

Reading In Science
Science!
This week we learned about a meteorologist her name is Lynn Burse she predicted that a tornado would happen in her town. We read about her in a book called "Tornado!" she has a team and her team learns about weather every day, every day she looks at her computer at a map to see what kind of weather there is. One day Lynn Burse checked on her computer and saw that there was a storm coming her way her team knew that a storm could lead to a tornado. Burse warned her team and they and she warned the people in their town. When Burse and her team usually warned the people they warned only for 15 minutes, but this time they warned for 40 minutes. Now the tornado was over but her the people in they're town weren't hurt. This book was about a real life person and how she predicted that there was a tornado. Me and my class did something called citing evidence. Also we learned something else called close reading that means reading really closely and seeing all the details and facts. We cited evidence in a book we learned how Lynn Burse predicted that there was going to be a tornado. She knew there was going to be a tornado by looking at the map she had on her computer, Lynn Burse saw that there was a storm and she predicted that there was a tornado because she knew that storms might lead to tornado's.

This Week in Room 100!
Student Writer This Week - Precious
Run for BEHYesterday we did Run for BEH. First went 5th, then went 4th grade, then went 3rd grade.I ran 7 laps that was higher then I ran last time. Last time I ran 5 laps. I was so happy that I ran more laps this time. After we are done running we have popsicle just like we do every year. We did this in kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade and this year.
Citing Evidence
This week we read Alexander That Used to Be Rich Last Sunday. The question was "How did Alexander and his brothers get along?" The second question was "If you met Alexander what advice would you give him?" We learned about "Citing Evidence". Citing evidence is when you go back in the story and find the evidence to answer the question.
This is our class reading the answers to the questions.
This is the "Citing Evidence" board that we made together.

Our Week
Our Week
by Kamara Simpson
On Monday we started the week of of like every other day with morning work but with a substitute her name is Ms. West. she is very nice. At recess Ms. West left and Ms. Bolger came back. Then we had math and music. On Tuesday we had art. We entered quietly like usual and watched a video about Ms. Yao's friend and how she makes still art into necklaces and jewelry. By the way still art is either art that you sculpture or paint and it looks like real life. We go to make still life. We made fruit and we made a plate to put the fruit on. Th fruit that we used was blueberries, bananas and apples. That was our week.

Start To A New Year!
3rd Graders,
I am so excited to see you all soon. I hope you all had a great summer and have stories to share with us when we return to school next week. I started setting up our new classroom yesterday and I am so looking forward to the new year. We moved next door to Ms. Wilke's room in room 100! The room is much bigger and has so much great light from the big windows.
I want to invite you all to the Back To School BBQ happening this Thursday! The BBQ is from 5-7 PM. I hope to see a lot of you there.
If I don't I will see you next week either on Tuesday or Wednesday and then we will all be together again on Thursday!
See you soon. Send me an email if you want.
